My Future Plan:
Preparing teachers and students for 21st Century learning can be a task. With lack of certain resources, constraints on how teaching should look, and how much time teachers have to teach a lesson, makes it difficult for this transition. Some goals that I set for myself in the vision that I have in playing an intricate role in preparing both parties for 21st learning are: bringing more inquiry-based learning in the math classroom. The second goal is to use writing in math as a tool to assist teachers in assessing students knowledge about a specific concept/skill.students. Another goal, long term, is to continue to push schools and some classroom teachers to create
STEM focused math classroom/STEM related activities throughout the year, and lastly be able to accumulate enough knowledge and resources so that I can share with my co workers.
When I first started this STEM program, my main goal was to learn more innovative ways to teach students, that would result in engaging lessons that fostered critical thinking and problem solving. I wanted to be the first at the school to marry Science and Math together so that students see the relationship between the two subjects. I wanted to make math more inquiry and project based vs. just ‘getting the right answer’.
As noted in the article , Personal Learning Networks for Educators: 10 Tips by Dr. Mark Wagner, he speaks of educators who feels isolated within their school and find it difficult to be able to collaborate with other educators because there is only one teacher for that subject area. That is me. I am the only middle school teacher at my school and becoming a Fellow allowed me to diversify my professional network. I have been given the opportunity to work and learn with high school math teachers, science teachers, administrators, and Special teachers (arts) by learning and working with.
After watching professional videos of STEM driven classrooms, participating in activities that deals with different modalities, and reading professional articles and books that relate to my struggles as a professional I am ready to spearhead my way into my intended goals and changes. I have learned that the way I was doing things may have met certain mandates, but it did not meet the needs of preparing my scholars for the 21st Century.
